Don’t Forget the Thank You Note

Sending a thank-you note following an interview is an often-overlooked task, yet one of the most important parts of the interview process.

It may seem unnecessary, but it matters to hiring managers and does, in fact, impact their hiring decisions.

Why is it so important you ask? Below are five reasons that'll make you think twice about skipping the thank you note:

1. It demonstrates you're enthusiastic about the job.

Taking the time to write a thank you note post interview shows the interviewer their time was important to you, and you're eager to move forward with the next steps.

The best time to send it is within 24 hours after your interview while it's still fresh in everyone's mind but you've allowed yourself the time to digest what was discussed.

Sending the thank you note immediately after the interview ends may look as if it was an obligatory response.

2. You automatically stand out.

The majority of job applicants fail to send thank you notes probably because they don’t think about it, or may not find it important.

Sending one automatically gives you an edge over the candidates that didn’t.

3. It gives you the opportunity to reiterate or clarify points you made during your interview.

You’ve probably left an interview wishing you had said more or elaborated on an answer. The thank you note gives you the opportunity to do so.

After the thank you, include a brief paragraph touching upon anything else you may have forgotten to say. Keep it brief though, so it doesn’t come across as a desperate attempt to make yourself look better.

4. It displays your written communication skills.

Email is the most widely used form of communication for most people within the workplace. With texting and slang so prevalent now, it’s important to maintain professionalism when communicating through writing.

Poorly written communication can have a major impact on your career. By being a strong writer, you demonstrate to the interviewer that you're capable of professional communication within the workplace.

5. It shows common courtesy and respect.

Believe it or not, writing a thank you note is great way to show you have manners and appreciate the time that was given to you.

It indicates that you're considerate of other people and will most likely treat your coworkers or clients with the same courtesy and respect if hired on.

Although writing a thank you note takes time and adds an extra step to the interview process, it might be the deciding factor between the job going to you or someone else. Don’t fall victim to the idea that it isn’t necessary or is unimportant like many others do. Make the effort to write a concise, well-written note and you’re sure to stand out from the crowd of applicants.
