The cover letter is usually the first thing the hiring manager sees, and is one of your best tools for making a positive first impression. It serves as an advertisement for your resume.
In a nutshell, your cover letter should say, "My unique skills and experience make me the right person for your company to solve your problem. I hope you're as excited about this as I am."
You should have a slightly different cover letter for each position you apply for; it should be tailored to each company and opportunity. Research the company you’re applying with and demonstrate your knowledge of their industry, position requirements and why you’re the best person for the job.
Employers have a problem, which is why they’re hiring. Your cover letter should show why you are the answer to their problem(s).
Be careful to not repeat your resume within your cover letter. Instead, generate interest by focusing on key aspects of your background and skills that directly relate to the job opportunity.
Don’t sound like every other applicant by repeating the well-known mantra: “I want to advance and make more money.” Instead, convey interest and enthusiasm: “I’m excited about the possibility of bringing my skills to work for you.”
Set yourself apart with your determination and confidence by informing the reader you’ll be calling within a few days to answer any questions and schedule an in-person interview.
Most cover letters ramble on in excruciating detail for one or even two full pages. Show respect for your reader’s time by limiting yourself to two or three well-written paragraphs at most.
Double check and verify the spelling and title of the hiring manager you’re sending your cover letter and resume to.
Proofread carefully – any mistakes within your cover letter will likely result in your resume being passed over without a second glance.
